WIND TURBINE HELPS PRODUCE ELECTRICITY
AT HARLEY-DAVIDSON DEALER.
O'FALLON --The curious want to know: Does it really produce electricity? Yes, the 60-foot tall wind turbine in front of the new O'Fallon Frieze Harley-Davidson dealership on Greenmount Road really does help power the new building, operations manager Steven Madura said.
"It's been up for about a month, and since then, we've had customers and other people come in and ask about it," Madura said. The turbine needs at least an 8 mph wind to produce electricity. At that rate, it can produce enough electricity to provide 5 percent to 10 percent of the power needed to keep the 34,000-square-foot building up and running. The sleek tower is topped with a turbine sporting 6-foot blades.
"Everybody thought it would be a lot uglier," Madura said. "No one thought it would be as attractive as it is. We actually wanted a bigger one. The one we have is designed for residential use, but it is the one the city would allow us to have with a special-use permit." When Frieze Harley-Davidson brought its plans to build an environmentally-friendly "green" facility to the O'Fallon City Council, the aldermen were skeptical about the wind turbine claims. Because no one had ever requested to build one within the city limits, there wasn't any city standard or construction code for the council to consult.
"Nobody knew exactly how to regulate it because it's forward-thinking, and no one had done it before, " Madura said. " Almost everything we heard was about the skyline of the city. People were really worried the turbine would be ugly and would ruin the skyline. Since it went up, everybody we've talked to has said how nice it actually looks and what a good idea it is to have it."
The turbine cost about $20,000, and it should pay for itself in electric-bill savings in about 10 years, Madura said. The turbine is part of several environmentally friendly designs that earned the new O'Fallon building an Energy-Efficient Dealership Award from the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. The dealership opened in September. Solar light tubes bring natural light into offices, renewable bamboo is used for flooring, and used motor oil is re-used to heat water and keep the repair shop toasty through its radiant-heat flooring system.
Part of the property is planted in native grasses that are drought-resistant. A highly-reflective roof keeps unwanted heat from the sun out of the building during hot summer months. About 80 percent of the construction debris was recycled while the building was going up.
"We'd be happy to let other businesses or homeowners take a closer look at the design and systems we put into place to save energy and water," said Virginia Frieze, owner of Frieze Harley-Davidson. "Sustainable design just makes sense on so m
